Tips & Guides

Here are general tips that apply to sailing anywhere as well as some specifically relating to Port Taranaki

  • Left vs. Right? Easy Peasy! If the wind's blowing over your left shoulder (port side!), you're the one who needs to give way. Think of it like a friendly "after you!" to anyone coming from your right (starboard). Just glide downwind and let them pass!
  • Same Direction? Down Low Wins! If you're both going the same way, but someone's further downwind, give them some space! They've got the right of way. Being upwind you have high ground - or sea in this case. On waves its the first person to start riding the swell/wave, even if they are just going straight on the wave, regardless if you gybe or tack upwind or downwind, its the first person on the swell. If you are sharing the wave get the nod from the person you are sharing with. When sharing leave them plenty of room to get round any sections that are popping up.
  • Power vs. Sail? Play it Safe! Sailboats usually have the right of way over motorboats (up to a certain size!), but hey, let's be real – not everyone knows the rules. Just keep a good distance from any powerboats, especially the big guys! And when it comes to ships, tugs, and tenders? They're the kings of the harbour, so give them plenty of room!
  • Harbour Traffic? Patience is Key! When big ships are coming in or out, just chill! Don't try to cross their path. Stay where you are and let them dock or clear the harbour entrance. It's like waiting for a train – just a bit bigger!
  • Share the Water, Spread the Smiles! We've got kayaks, SUPs, outrigger canoes, and swimmers all enjoying the harbour. Give everyone plenty of space and keep an eye out, especially for swimmers near those yellow buoys! It's all about being a good neighbour.
  • Rock and Roll (Carefully!) Watch out for those sneaky rocks near the town end of the port beach and further out in the middle, especially at low tide! When you're launching head out from the town end or yacht club end. Town end, paddle out a bit (around 10 meters) before you hop on the foil, just to be safe. High tide? You're generally good to go!
  • Yacht Races? Be a Good Sport! If there's a yacht race happening, try to stay out of their way. If you need to cross, go behind the last boat, otherwise try to stay off the course. They'll appreciate it!
  • Good Vibes Only! Remember, respect gets respect! Let's keep the water a fun and friendly place for everyone.

Got Questions? We've Got Answers! Don't be shy! Ask a friendly local for tips. Let's make every session awesome! Happy winging!
